About S.V.G.S.

Since September 1908, the St. Vincent Grammar School had been producing outstanding and exceptional individuals in almost every sphere of endeavour imaginable locally and all across the world.

According to Sir Frederick Ballantyne, Governor General of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, "No one can doubt that the graduates of this school have played a significant role in the development of this nation."

When the school first opened its doors under the resident master Mr. F.W. Reeves, according to Dr. Adrian Fraser, local Historian and past student only 13 students were initially enrolled.  At that time, he says, students entered the Grammar School at age 8 until 1948 when they began entering at age 11.

Today, under the leadership of Mr. Curtis King, the school occupies the same premises as it did then with continued structural improvements and additions made to the original building over the years.  At present, 750 boys aged 11-19 occupy 27 classrooms in groups of about 30.  Our students travel daily from as far as Sandy Bay and Chateaubelair in the north and Bequia in the Grenadines to participate in a 9-session day that lasts from 8:10 a.m. to 3:05pm.

Our current staff is 50 members strong, and is lead by the Head Master and Senior Management Team.  All staff members are sufficiently qualified to deliver the school curriculum which offers a 25 subject programme spread over 5 years.  Each student and teacher functions as part of a wider faculty/department, year group and house, with leadership by an assigned member of staff.  Prefects are selected annually to assist with keeping order in the school.

The five departments/faculties are:

  • Science Department
  • Business Studies and Art
  • Information Technology and Sports
  • Modern Languages
  • Social Sciences

Each student is assigned to a House as they register in first form.  There are four (4) houses each named after an outstanding former Headmaster of the school and are represented by a colour as follows:

CRICK HOUSE (Red)

LOPEY HOUSE (Yellow)

MILLAR (Green)

REEVES (Blue)

The prefect body is designed to assist with the overall discipline of the school. Prefects are selected by teachers and administration based on exceptional academic work, attitude, punctuality, attendance, decorum, maturity, responsibility, and leadership qualities.  Full prefects must be member s of the 5th form while acting prefects may come from the 4th form.

Each year we welcome a new cohort of smart young men who strive to achieve excellence not only in academics but in their extra-curricular involvements.  Our recent accomplishments through them include: english, science, plant, cxc, extra currricular, IT… to get.

As we face the future we look forward with great anticipation for continued success and excellence through even rougher ways and still to the heights.
